The Bibliographer's Manual of English Literature

BOHN, Henry G. and (LOWNDES, William Thomas).
London: George Bell and Sons, 1869-1880.
New edition, Revised edition corrected and enlarged. 11 volumes (complete).

This is the best edition of Lowndes' landmark work, with Bohn's invaluable additions, including the final volume (the appendix). Lowndes had begun this work in 18820, and while working on it, he also compiled some of Bohn's famous catalogues -- his knowledge of English books and bibliography was encyclopedic. This work covers early English printing, history, literature and includes annotations for nearly every work, bibliographic details, locations of copies of the rarer books, and recent market values. Lowndes' work inspired a wider interest in both bibliography and book-collecting, and influenced several generations of researchers and collectors.
