The Brothers: A Comedy. As It Is Performed at the Theatre Royal in Covent Garden

[CUMBERLAND, Richard].
London: Printed for W. Griffin, at Garrick's Head, in Chatharine-Street, Strand, 1770.
First edition. The seventh of his more than sixty works. A very good copy of Todd's "A" edition, with press figures (iii)-1, 8-1, 10-1, 20-2, 29-3, 39-2, 46-3, 55-2, 60-3, 69-2.
Octavo, disbound. Some pages a bit unevenly trimmed when rebound, else fine.

This play provided a case study for William B. Todd's early investigations into the significance of press figures. By an analysis of press figures, and an examination of contemporary reviews, Todd was able to show that the present printing precedes those issued with an engraved title-page (one of which is a partial reimpression, the other entirely reset); for details, see PBSA Vol. 45 (1st Quarter, 1951), pp. 72-76. By coincidence, this very copy is from the library of Professor Todd. [Watson pp. 191-193, listing date of 1767 in error. CBEL II, 814].
