Arctic Explortions in the Years 1853, '54, '55

KANE, Elisha Kent.
Philadelphia: Childs and Peterson, 1856. Profusely illustrated with full page plates and with in text drawings.
First edition. Two volumes.
Octavo, three-quarter blue smooth calf over marbled boards, spine heavy gilt with raised bands, red morocco gilt lettered labels, all edges marbled, marbled endpapers. Front cover expertly repaired, spines slightly browned, light rubbing at spine ends, some very occasional foxing, bookplates on front endpaper, rear free endpapers are loose and show glue marks, albeit a nice set.

This copy contains in volume I eleven full page plates, one map, frontispiece portrait and engraved title page, plus all the in text illustrations; volume II has the frontispiece portrait, seven full page plates, one map and folding diagram, plus in text illustrations. This is in variance with Arctic Bibliography. The illustrations are detailed and very well executed, and show people, animals, including a wonderful scene with a grizzly bear in the camp, ships frozen in the ice, ice formations, as well as the members of the expedition. [Sabin 37001, Hill vol. I, p. 159. Arctic Bibliography 8373].
