(1818–1887) Elder brother of Gordon of Karthoum. Written from the Royal Engineers Camp at Sebastapol. At this time the soon-to-be famous younger brother was a 22-year old subaltern engineer who spent the year 1855 in the Crimean trenches, where his daring was conspicuous. After the surrender of Sebastapol, he was employed on the demolition of the ports' docks. Apparently the more recently arrived Henry was also: "The rainy season seems fairly to have overtaken us in the middle of our operations on the dock yard–we will however persevere".
