San Francisco: December 5, 1849.
Approximately 6-1/4 x 7-7/8 inches, written in brown ink on tan paper, old horizontal fold. A few minor brown spots, else fine.
An interesting note headed "Before Hon John W. Geary Esq. First Alcalde / of the District of San Francisco" regarding the administration of the estate of the late Lazarus Everharb, Thomas Jeffeson Smith, John S. Gibbs, Walter Titus and William E. Woodruff are to receive $200 each for appraisment services. The document is signed "John W. Geary / First Alcalde" . It would appear that the bulk of the document is written by a secretary and the amount of the payment, date and signature are by Geary.
John White Geary (December 30, 1819 – February 8, 1873) was an American lawyer, politician, Freemason, and a Union general in the American Civil War. He was the first alcalde and first mayor of San Francisco, a governor of the Kansas Territory, and the 16th governor of Pennsylvania. His sojourn in California was brief he returned east in 1852.
