Part I contains several monographs including a history on the conquest of California by William Carey Jones, and a history of the Pious Fund of California by the President of the Society, John T. Doyle. Part II devotes the entire 440 pages to a history of the College (later University) of California by Samuel H. Wiley.
The work was printed by Edward Bosqui, San Francisco's first "fine printer".
